“One more beer and heavy metal, and I’m just fine”

I love to travel. And I love metal bars. Every time I arrive in a new city, after a long day of sight seeing, I just want to find a dank, dark corner to drink beer and listen to some Motorhead. Cause they always seem to be playing Motorhead.

Over beers one day* I started making a list of all the metal bars I’ve visited over the years. For the next few days I kept thinking of ones I’d forgotten. I decided I wanted a place to keep track, so here I am. As I’ve been going I’ve expanded the list to include some bars that aren’t metal bars, strictly speaking, but due to decor or other factors I think they fit. I’ve also started to make it more of a general metal travel blog including the festivals and concerts I travel for, as well as a bit more of my trip information in the style of a traditional travel blog.

See, I do touristy things too!

Starting with my most recent trip to Europe in June of 2019 I’m going to work my way back and record them all. Fortunately, I’m an avid user of Untappd (I may like shit bars, but I like good beer) so I have photos and some memories recorded to try and piece it all together. Going forward I will attempt to take proper photos.

Fairy lights and vines might seem like a weird name for a metal travel blog, and that’s kind of the point. I like my metal bars to be dive bars, the crappier the better. I’ll be disappointed if the chairs aren’t wobbly, or if they aren’t out of hand soap and toilet paper. And I’m rarely disappointed. But I also really like pretty things. So, I’ve joked that if I ever opened a metal bar it would be wildly unsuccessful because I’d fill it with things like fairy lights and vines. Sadly, I don’t think I’ll be opening a bar anytime soon, so I guess this is the next best thing.

*Not at a metal bar, we don’t have one in Edmonton!

Number of pubs visited and recorded as of January 21, 2020:

28 pubs in 15 cities and 10 countries.

Cheers!

Duff’s & Peter Steele’s Tree – New York

October 2019 – 168 Marcy Ave, Brooklyn, New York Man, did we ever have high hopes for this place. It seemed to be THE metal bar in New York. And Type O Negative used to hang out there! It was a huuuuuge disappointment, only coming in at number 8 on the list. Here again is…
